Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was a sole child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she enrolled in Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become the high school's English teacher. Her dream to become an English teacher at high school was shattered when she quit school. She began her career as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. Her first public appearance was as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
